Portfolio Management – Linking Projects to Purpose

Research on what motivates people is clear. One of the top 3 motivating factors is having a sense of purpose in what you’re doing. Many project managers understand the objectives and scope of their projects, but often lack the “big picture” of how their project links to the overall strategy and ultimately success of the company. Knowing this link to the big picture gives all project team members a sense of contribution and purpose. The power of purpose increases motivation and also supports better decision making during the life of the project.

By understanding the value drivers of the company, not just profit, portfolio management can help companies select the ‘best’ projects. Through the portfolio selection process the expected value of each project is determined. The projects expected value then provides a direct project link to the overall strategy and contribution. Linking projects and purpose is just one of the benefits of effective portfolio management.

Bio:

As the Director PMO and Change Management at Star Alliance John’s responsibilities include enterprise-wide portfolio management, organizational change management and project delivery. He implemented portfolio management and developed the PMO to become a strategic partner to ensure the ‘right’ projects were selected in the first place. He has a strong interest in strategy execution and portfolio management. He teaches portfolio management and speaks at various strategy execution & project management conferences around the world. He is PfMP certified and featured on the internationally recognized Project Management podcast “Episode 269: Portfolio Management and the Strategic Project Management Office (SPMO)”.
