Conflict Resolution Techniques for Agile Leaders

Conflict is inevitable in any human endeavour. Combat is optional! Healthy or unhealthy outcomes are a choice. We can take the friction out of the Agile Manifesto’s “people and interactions.” At the heart of every conflict is a breakdown in communication. Expectations may not have been set or met, context may not have been transferred, intentions and actions may have been misinterpreted for whatever reason.

The American Management Association (AMA) found that managers spend at least 24% of their day managing conflict. (The AMA said nothing if the time was well spent or resulted in healthy conflict resolution.) Having conflict resolution techniques in your agility toolbox can save on wasting emotional energy and increase positive outcomes for yourself, your teams, and organization. Unhealthy conflict resolution techniques lead to toxic culture and individuals that are unpractised in empathy because they avoid conflict.

As leaders and team members we are called to diffuse negative dynamics, and as a result, build a culture that provides a healthy outcome. The desired effect is where conflict leads to connectedness, intimacy and trust.

Measurement and Governance for Agile Leaders

To achieve true business agility, leaders must not only grow and support self-reliant, cross-functional, self-organizing teams; they must also change the way their organizations fund and oversee their agile initiatives. They must believe in feedback and allow that feedback to work. However, old measures like “on time” and “within budget” are not useful when markets and customers are constantly changing, potentially resulting in delivering great solutions to problems that no longer exist.

This session will introduce a framework called Evidence-Based Management that helps organization to define measures that are meaningful to them, in four dimensions: Unrealized Value, Current Value, Time to Market, and Ability to Innovate. The framework helps agile leaders gauge the health of teams and the products they deliver, providing an alternative to schedule and budget-based governance models that fall short of meeting the needs of agile organizations.

“What do you think?” and “How does this look?” are easy questions to ask when presenting users with potential design concepts, but they rarely give way to meaningful feedback.

Toyota Kata – What is it, Where Might it Fit, and Why?

Future solutions are getting less and less likely to be ones we’ve used before. And even if we can draw on ‘experience’, it may represent the lowest form of innovation which may not be good enough; we are limiting ourselves to only what we know now.

Agile is about mindset, not about process. Mindset can support agile behaviors or can hinder them. When is Your Agile Transformation Done?

After over a decade of agile transformations, many organizations have several years of agile experience of agile are naturally looking for signs that the change is complete. Attention turns to the level of skill or maturity an organization needs in order to declare the transformation a success. As a result, models of agile maturity have emerged that promise to somehow measure how agile you are.

The good news is that agile, by definition, should be iteratively delivering value from the moment a transformation starts. Looking back, your ability to deliver has already changed immeasurably. You are already faster, more focused, and delivering a product with higher quality. The bad news is that you have only just started your journey. Change itself has changed, as Gary Hamel said. What looks mature today will be “bare essentials” tomorrow.

Using the concept of Wardley Maps, we will talk about what agile maturity looks like today, and where agile maturity will go in the future. We will learn how iterative value delivery is the price to pay to move along the experience curve. The more frequently you deliver value, the faster you move along the experience curve. By introducing a model of increasing agility, you will be able to map out the path of your transformation, filling in any gaps that you may have and beginning to understand what direction your transformation may take you in the future. Specifically, you can identify the drivers needed to reap the benefits along the way, rather than at some mythical end point. Business agility is not a destination but a continually evolving journey. Learn how to enjoy the journey rather than long for the destination.

Agile Leadership is a broadly defined buzzword today. Does it just mean servant leadership or is there more? How does Agile leadership fit with “Agile” Management? While the industry is figuring out all this, at Riot Games, we didn’t really care about terminology and definitions, but rather our focus is on building strong human-centric leaders to lead our 2500-person agile organization. Through these efforts, I think we have created our own understanding of what Leadership in an Agile organization looks like that is worth sharing.

In this talk, Ahmed will share his reflections on the domain of Agile Leadership in general and share the frameworks and current ways of thinking about leadership at Riot Games. He will highlight some areas where he disagrees with common agile rhetoric like “having single wringable necks” and using “commanding” stances. He will introduce a new leadership roles & responsibilities framework that provides teams a way to balance between team-level autonomy, organizational-wide alignment and strong accountability.
