The Revolution in Training & Development

By Tim Andrews

Abstract

There is a growing revolution, a major disruption in Training & Development (T&D) today. Not a trend, not “soft skills” repackaged, but an industry upheaval. Ask yourself, “How many leadership or management classes have you attended in your career?” Now ask, “Two weeks later, how much did you really change in what you said and did?”

The experience may have been insightful, even informative. You may have walked away understanding more, even excited about what you learned… yet very little really changed in what you say and do. The opportunity to make real sustained behavior change is lost.

No one doubts that the current workplace facing organizations is defined by almost unbelievable change and increasing complexity. We are in a significant social revolution as much as anything technical. It is almost a cliché, if it were not so true.

So, the next question is, “In the past 25 years with so much change and disruption innevery industry, every business sector, every company…why has Training & Development remained basically unchanged?”

Bottom line: there IS a disrupting training revolution underway. It is strong, and it is growing. The fast-changing workplace is now organic, much younger and socially complex. Companies are hungry, demanding more meaningful learning experiences that improve performance, not a repackaged traditional training class.
