What’s Covered in IIL’s PMP® Exam Prep Course:

The Business Environment lesson addresses foundational knowledge about how projects align with the organization’s strategy to provide business value. It introduces project management principles and Agile principles to provide a basis for managing projects. In addition, we cover important business concepts such as project governance, project compliance, change management and organizational change.

Topics in Module 1 include:

  • Foundation
  • Strategic Alignment
  • Project Benefits and Value
  • Organizational Culture and Change Management
  • Project Governance
  • Project Compliance

Stakeholders are the reason we do projects. From the very beginning of the project we should be identifying, analyzing, and engaging with project stakeholders. The project team is a key set of stakeholders that we work with to deliver the project. Key to project success is ensuring that all stakeholders have a common understanding of the project, the project lifecycle, and the development approach(es) that will be used to deliver value.

Topics in Module 2 include:

  • Identify and Engage Stakeholders
  • Form the Team
  • Build Shared Understanding
  • Project Approach

Planning, whether done at the start of the project or continuously throughout the project, is the backbone of project management. Planning entails exploring, defining, and refining scope, quality, resources, schedules, and costs. This information is evaluated through the lens of risk management prior to being integrated into a project management plan, tailored for the needs of the organization and the project.

Topics in Module 3 include:

  • Planning Projects
  • Scope
  • Schedule
  • Resources
  • Budget
  • Risks
  • Quality
  • Integrate Plans

Leadership is a set of behaviors that team members employ to create a collaborative environment for all stakeholders. Each project and each project team is unique, therefore the way we implement leadership skills flexes to meet the needs of the situation. We will cover leadership skills critical to project success including communication, coaching, empowerment, and conflict management.

Topics in Module 4 include:

  • Craft Your Leadership Skills
  • Create a Collaborative Team Environment
  • Empower the Team
  • Support Team Member Performance
  • Communicate and Collaborate with Stakeholders
  • Training, Coaching, and Mentoring
  • Manage Conflict

Throughout the project we monitor progress to ensure performance is going as planned. Undoubtedly there will be variances, issues, impediments, and changes that arise. Project managers evaluate the situation and apply necessary actions to ensure successful delivery. Part of being accountable for project success entails continuous learning and improvement, and communicating this information as appropriate.

Topics in Module 5 include:

  • Implement Ongoing Improvements
  • Support Performance
  • Evaluate Project Progress
  • Manage Project Issues and Impediments
  • Manage Project Changes

The end of a phase or the project entails ensuring that the project deliverables can bring about the promised benefits and value. This includes knowledge transfer and proper administrative closure.

Topics in Module 6 include:

  • Project / Phase Closure
  • Benefits Realization
  • Knowledge Transfer

A combination of education and/or professional experience is required for the PMP exam and certification. The PMI Authorized PMP Exam Prep course provides candidates with the mandatory 35 contact hours of training required by PMI to submit your application for the PMP exam and certification.

PMI only grants PDUs (Professional Development Units) to those who hold a PMI certification. If you are taking the PMI Authorized PMP Exam Prep course and have a PMI certification, you are eligible to apply for PDUs.

To learn more about PDUs, see details here.

PMI strongly recommends the Exam Content Outline as the best way to understand what is covered on the PMP exam.

See IIL's comprehensive list of suggested study materials here.

IIL also encourages using a test simulator, which is included with the PMP Prep Course, to build familiarity and endurance for the final exam.

After the foundational 35 class hours have been completed, most PMP Prep candidates should plan an average of 2-3 months with 2-3 hours per day of consistent study to prepare for the PMP exam. Study can be achieved through:

  • Test simulators with adequate feedback to build endurance for the 180-question, four-hour exam
  • Reading through related resources to develop comprehension of concepts, rather than rote memorization
  • Greater success is found when joining study groups and finding peers to communicate and work alongside with!

Simultaneously, be sure to submit your PMP Application with PMI in order to qualify for the exam, and to schedule your PMP Exam when you feel confident to do so. IIL is ready to assist you with all steps in the process.

The new exam based on the PMBOK 8th Edition is scheduled for July 1, 2026.

The Project Management Book of Knowledge (PMBOK) Eighth Edition is set to release on July 1, 2026. As such, the PMP Prep Course and exam are set to update alongside it. Here are some key differences for the new version:

  • Process Groups have returned as "Focus Areas": Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring & Controlling, and Closing.
  • There are 40 consolidated processes, down from the 49 found in previous process-centric editions.
  • PMBOK 8 intentionally supports both Agile vs. Predictive (Waterfall) models equally, presenting itself as a "hybrid-first" framework.
  • Tailoring is now embedded directly into every domain with specific industry examples, rather than being a separate chapter.
  • The new "Integrate Sustainability" principle introduces the "Triple Bottom Line" (Environment, Social, and Economic) as a core responsibility for PMs.
  • PMBOK 8 includes a dedicated section on on Artifical Intelligence in project delivery.
  • "Holistic View" systems thinking is a new principle (merging "Complexity" and "System Interactions") that focuses on how project decisions impact the wider organization.
  • PMBOK 8 addresses "Value" differently, moving from "Value Delivery" as a concept to "Focus on Value" as a mindset, emphasizing measurable business outcomes over task completion.
  • The PMBOK has grown from roughly 250 pages (7th Edition) to over 400 pages (8th Edition) due to the reintroduction of technical process guidance.

No, the PMBOK 8th Edition is a maturation of the 7th Edition. The fundamentals of Stakeholders, Risk, and Scope remain similar.
