Are You Eligible for PMP® Certification?
To qualify for the PMP®, you must meet one of these three requirements:
- High school or secondary school diploma
- Minimum 5 years (60 months) experience leading and managing projects within the past eight years
- 35 hours of project management education/training
- Bachelor’s degree or higher (or global equivalent)
- 3 years (36 months) experience leading and managing projects within the past eight years
- 35 hours of project management education/training
- Bachelor’s degree or higher (or global equivalent) from a GAC accredited program
- 2 years experience (24 months) leading and managing projects within the past eight years
- 35 hours of project management education/training
Steps to Get Your PMP® Certification
Step 1: Register for IIL’s PMP® Exam Prep Course
IIL offers PMP Exam Prep courses in person or virtually. Our classes are offered in over 100 countries and 20+ languages. See our schedule of upcoming PMP Exam Prep classes.
Step 2: Attend Online or In-Person Classes
IIL is an Authorized Training Provider (ATP) for PMI’s PMP program. This means our course materials are approved by PMI and provide you will all the information you need to pass the exam.
Your class will be facilitated by IIL’s world class instructors, including many that have been preparing students for the PMP for over a decade. This class meets PMI’s requirement for 35 hours of project management education.
Step 3: Study and Assess
After class, create a study plan to support you in achieving your goal. Your study plan should include familiarity with the PMP Exam Content Outline that serves as a blueprint for the exam.
You will have access to our PMP Exam Prep Tool with over 1500+ curated sample test questions that you can access as many times as you like for up to 6 months.

Step 4: Register for the Exam
Fill out the online application. The application is very detailed so set aside several hours to document your experience. You can find out more about the application by reviewing the PMP Handbook.
To complete your application, you will need to pay USD $425 if you are a PMI member, or USD $595 if you are not. Once your application is approved, you can register for the in-person or online proctored test via the Pearson Vue website.
Step 5: Take the Exam
The day of the exam you will need to show your PMI Eligibility ID and a government issued photo ID at check-in. You cannot bring anything with you into the testing area, including dictionaries or calculators, though a calculator will be available on the computer.
There are 180 multiple choice, multiple response, matching, hotspot and limited fill-in-the-blank questions. You will have 230 minutes to complete the exam. There are two ten minute breaks scheduled that are not part of the 230 minutes.
Once you have completed the exam and submitted it, you will receive your results and a report showing your score for each domain.
Step 6: What’s Next
Once you pass the exam you can proudly display your electronic PMP Badge.
PMI requires 60 Professional Development Units (PDUs) every three years to maintain certification. IIL presents annual online conferences, free webinars, Learning in Minutes, as well as a myriad of classes and certifications.

Module 1: Business Environment
The Business Environment lesson addresses foundational knowledge about how projects align with the organization’s strategy to provide business value. It introduces project management principles and Agile principles to provide a basis for managing projects. In addition, we cover important business concepts such as project governance, project compliance, change management and organizational change.

Module 2: Start the Project
Stakeholders are the reason we do projects. From the very beginning of the project we should be identifying, analyzing, and engaging with project stakeholders. The project team is a key set of stakeholders that we work with to deliver the project. Key to project success is ensuring that all stakeholders have a common understanding of the project, the project lifecycle, and the development approach(es) that will be used to deliver value.

Module 3: Plan the Project
Planning, whether done at the start of the project or continuously throughout the project, is the backbone of project management. Planning entails exploring, defining, and refining scope, quality, resources, schedules, and costs. This information is evaluated through the lens of risk management prior to being integrated into a project management plan, tailored for the needs of the organization and the project.

Module 4: Lead the Project Team
Leadership is a set of behaviors that team members employ to create a collaborative environment for all stakeholders. Each project and each project team is unique, therefore the way we implement leadership skills flexes to meet the needs of the situation. We will cover leadership skills critical to project success including communication, coaching, empowerment, and conflict management.

Part of being accountable for project success entails continuous learning and improvement, and communicating this information as appropriate.
